Sound Mirrors
UK, 1999
"Sound Mirrors" captures concrete structures in Dungeness, UK, dating back to the 1920s. Originally designed as a pre-radar sound tracking system, these objects collected and amplified sound, which operators listened to using a stethoscope-like device, aiming to detect hostile aircraft attacks. However, the effectiveness of sound mirrors was limited due to the inability to differentiate between hostile and other sounds, as well as the rapid advancements in radar technology. Today, these structures serve as historical remnants, examples of early sound detection technology.
