On July 26, 1963, at 5:17 a.m., a devastating 6.1 Mw earthquake struck Skopje, the capital of the Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Macedonia, leaving the city completely destroyed. However, from the ashes arose a powerful symbol of renewal and progress, as Skopje was rebuilt to embody a newer, better world.
