On July 26, 1963, at 5:17 a.m., a devastating 6.1 Mw earthquake struck Skopje, the capital of the Yugoslav Socialist Republic of Macedonia, leaving the city completely destroyed. However, from the ashes arose a powerful symbol of renewal and progress, as Skopje was rebuilt to embody a newer, better world.

In November 2021, Stylobate embarked on an expedition that eventually materialised in the book titled “Skopje: Transmissions from the Past Century’s Most Ambitious Transnational Urban Project.” Now, on the 60th anniversary of the tragic earthquake event, we extend an invitation to read one of its chapters on syg.ma .
